Governor Appoints Physician, Businessman To Healthcare Commission

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - Gov. Dave Freudenthal has appointed a Buffalo doctor and a Riverton businessman to seats on the Wyoming Healthcare Commission.

Dr. Lawrence Kirven, a family practice physician, and Cliff Root, president of Bonneville Transloaders Inc., replace Carol Jenkins and Steve Mossbrook, whose terms on the commission expire this year. Both Kirven and Root are Republicans.

Kirven serves on the Wyoming Medical Society Board of Trustees and is the president of the board of directors of the Mountain Pacific Quality Healthcare Foundation. Root sits on the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality Citizens Advisory Panel and the Wyoming Business Alliance steering committee.

“I am honored to be appointed,” said Root, 57. “I can see a real value in a concerted effort by all the various stakeholders represented on this commission to try to overcome this juggernaut of a problem called healthcare in Wyoming.”

“It is certainly a privilege to serve on the Wyoming Healthcare Commission,” said Kirven, 53. “Every citizen in the state of Wyoming is all too familiar with the problems of our current healthcare system, especially the rapid escalation in the cost of care. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to help shape the future of healthcare in Wyoming. Although the challenge is monumental, I believe the goal of accessible, safe, and affordable healthcare in the state of Wyoming can be achieved.”

The Wyoming Healthcare Commission was created by statute in 2003 to develop strategies for improving health care and lowering the costs of health care and medical liability insurance in Wyoming. It includes 11 members, who serve in staggered two-year terms.

“Both Cliff, as a significant employer, and Larry, as a longtime physician, have unique and exceptionally important perspectives to bring to the Healthcare Commission’s table,” Freudenthal said. “They have my thanks for continuing the good work on improving accessibility and affordability of healthcare in Wyoming.”
